Preventing Bathtub Clogs
Preventing clogs in the bathtub is a much easier task than constantly trying to unclog a drain. One method of preventing clogs in the tub is to remove the rubber stopper that is used to fill the tub with water and replace it with a basket strainer, which can be purchased at your local hardware store. The basket strainer will sit in the drain hole and will help to catch most of the hair and other debris that frequently goes down the drain and causes clogs. Regularly clean the strainer by removing it from the drain and emptying any contents into the trash, rinse the strainer clean and replace it. This is an inexpensive and easy way to prevent clogs.
Another method of preventing clogs is to purchase and regularly use cleaning agents that are intended to be poured down the drain to help clear the pipes and keep them free from clogs.
Some people use the bathtub to clean big things that don’t easily fit in the kitchen sink or use the bathtub to clean pets. Any little bits of dirt, rocks, or other debris can help in creating a clog. Washing pets in the bathtub just sends more hair down the drain, and pet hair is typically so short that it doesn’t easily get caught by a drain strainer or drain basket. Cleaning your pet in the bathtub can help clogs to happen more quickly. Use your bathtub for cleaning people only. All other cleaning should take place outside with a hose.
A method that can help to breakdown hairs and grease that might be stuck in a drain is to carefully pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. The hot water will help to melt any built up grease and body oils down the drain.
